strategy for success

What are your goals in medicine?

Are you an aspiring neurosurgeon at a school lacking a department of neurosurgery? Do you have your sights set on ophthalmology but worry that your USMLE Step 1 score will limit your chances of reaching your dreams? Do you covet a residency program which has never taken a student from your school?

Are you concerned about a red flag in your background (e.g., failed USMLE, clerkship struggles)? Are you an older IMG graduate that is having difficulty getting residency interviews?

If you're facing one or more obstacles in your efforts to reach your professional goals, the key to your success will be having in place the "right" strategy to overcome these challenges.

You need and deserve specific, highly individualized advice that takes into account your background and goals.

"I wanted to let you know that I matched into my # 1 ranked program! The plan you helped me create made all the difference. I would never have thought to do those things. The advice went so far beyond what you typically hear."

THE PROBLEM WITH GENERAL ADVICE

Too often, applicants receive general advice that is not tailored to their circumstances or situation. You've heard this advice time and time again. It sounds something like this:

  • "I know you got a low USMLE Step 1 score. Just do well on Step 2 CK, and you'll be fine." (Applicant thinking "I'm not sure how to boost my score.")

  • "You have 6 months before you apply. Try to get a couple of publications by then." (Applicant thinking "Is this even possible. I have no idea how to do this.")

  • "You will want to honor as many clerkships as you can." (Applicant thinking "I haven't honored anything yet. I'm not sure what I should do differently.")

General advice of this sort doesn't leave you with a plan.

Without a sound plan, you risk taking actions which do not advance your cause. Even worse, you could take actions based on misinformation that make it even more difficult for you to reach your goals. You can also suffer from inaction.
