​Where will the rotation take place: The outpatient US clinical experience will take place at multiple outpatient locations in Houston, including the preceptor's main center as well as ambulatory surgery centers. Extensive travel is required. A vehicle is highly recommended.  

 

Hours: Monday - Friday 7 AM to 5 PM

​

Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

​

What you will do: You will be under the supervision of a board certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist. He has trained at multiple institutions, including Harvard University. At every stop of his career, he has been recognize for the quality of care he delivers. He has also performed research in the field, and has published and presented his work in scientific journals and at conferences.

 

He has an extensive background in teaching, having served as an Assistant Professor. He is the past recipient of a medical student teaching award for excellence in teaching as a resident. He is currently involved in teaching anesthesiology residents at Ben Taub Hospital. He holds staff appointments at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Providence Hospital of North Houston.

Patients presenting to his center often come in with headache, facial pain, joint pain (neck, back, peripheral), sciatica, and neuropathy. He uses cutting-edge treatments to manage these conditions in an evidence-based manner. Among the procedures that he performs include epidural steroid injections, joint injections, trigger joint injections, stellate ganglion blocks, trigeminal ganglion blocks and spinal cord stimulator placement. ​

After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient encounters and learn the following under the preceptor’s supervision:​

​​

• Taking patient histories.

• Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.

• Presenting patients.

• Writing progress notes. 

• Have opportunities to observe procedures. 

• Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

• Being involved in patient education.

• Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance. 

​

There may be opportunities to participate in projects to improve the practice. Examples include development of templates for note writing, and instructions for patients pre- and post-procedure.  Since this is a growing practice, there may also be opportunities to participate in social media marketing. Please note that the availability of the project is at the discretion of the preceptor.

​Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation: The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
