Information about this clinical experience:
This is an outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in pulmonary and critical care medicine. After completing internal medicine residency and pulmonary/critical care medicine fellowship training, the doctor established an outpatient practice in Florida. The physician holds multiple faculty appointments at U.S. medical schools, including the position of Assistant Professor of Medicine at Florida State University College of Medicine. The preceptor is on staff at Doctors Renaissance Hospital.
The doctor’s teaching philosophy is to inspire students to take ownership of patients. The preceptor is an advocate of caring for patients in the same manner you would want for yourself or for your loved ones.
Students will gain experience in the evaluation and management of diverse pulmonary conditions, including asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep apnea. The center is equipped with the latest technology to perform tests and procedures, including allergy testing, comprehensive pulmonary function testing, echocardiography, ultrasonography, methacholine challenge testing, and speech therapy. Also on site are intensive cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation services. This will provide a great opportunity to see how these tests are performed and interpreted.
Because the doctor’s center is actively involved in clinical trials research, rotators can see how physicians in practice can maintain an academic focus and further the understanding of disease in the field. Past or current trials include predictive biomarkers for lung cancer and asthma, efficacy of subcutaneous immunoglobulin in primary immunodeficiency, pulmonary hypertension screening in interstitial lung disease, and oscillating lung expansion therapy in bronchiectasis among others.
As an expert in pulmonary and critical care medicine, the doctor is sought out as a speaker and media expert and has been featured by different outlets including television channels and podcasts.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories under supervision.
Examining patients under supervision.
Presenting patients.
Navigating the EMR (eClinicalWorks) the point of care.
Having opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Pulmonology.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
