Information about this clinical experience:
You will work with a pediatrician who is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. The physician has attained the status of Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics which is offered to a select group of pediatricians by the largest professional society of pediatrics. This is a highly-rated physician who has been recognized by children and their families for providing quality care that is personalized and safe. The doctor holds a staff appointment at Children's Medical Center Dallas. Previously, the physician was a faculty member at the Children's Hospital Milwaukee. The preceptor has also practiced in Chicago and California.
In this outpatient clinic, you will take on an increasing role in patient encounters under the preceptor's supervision and learn the care of newborns, infants, toddlers, elementary-age children, and adolescents. Among the encounters will be newborn visits, well child exams, vaccination appointments, and growth and development screenings. Please note that this preceptor has a multicultural patient population. Approximately 50% of patients with be non-English speaking. It is important to take part in clinical experiences with patients that do not speak English as the patient populations served by most pediatric residency programs will include a significant proportion of non-English speakers. Developing the ability to elicit information via translators, interpreters, and family members are vital skills.
From an educational standpoint, this preceptor prefers to assess your strengths and weaknesses early in the rotation so that the doctor can tailor the rotation to your needs, thereby maximizing your learning opportunities. The preceptor will give talks to students periodically on important topics.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Writing progress notes in the EMR (eClinicalWorks).
Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in pediatrics. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine will also find this rotation particularly useful.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
Dr. X’s rotation was extremely helpful in developing my clinical acumen with infectious diseases and rounding on multiple patients in a day. I learned how to manage patients in a multidisciplinary manner daily from an infectious point of view
