Information about this clinical experience:

You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in neurology. Following residency training in neurology, this attending completed a fellowship in neuromuscular medicine. The preceptor has a strong background in teaching, having been involved in the past in the education of internal medicine residents at Unity Point Hospital. The doctor continues to hold a hospital staff appointment at Unity Point Hospital.


In this outpatient practice, you will encounter patients with a wide variety of neuromuscular disease, including neuropathies, myopathieis, radiculopathies, and neuromuscular junction disorders. Please note that the preceptor also sees patients with other types of neurologic disease, including cerebrovascular disease and post-stroke care. You will be able to hone your skills in history-taking, gain confidence in your ability to perform the neurological exam, and present cases. The preceptor likes to have students write simulated notes based on the patients they have seen; these notes are reviewed by the preceptor and feedback is given.


Procedures are done in the clinic which you will be able to observe and learn from. For example, with EMGs, you will be able to better understand its indications, role in diagnosis, procedural steps, and possible complications. Other procedures include Botox for dystonia and hemifacial spasm and occipital nerve block, among others.


Students will be expected to give topic presentations during the rotation. If an interesting case is encountered, students may have an opportunity to write a case report.


During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:


  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Writing simulated notes for preceptor review and feedback.

  • Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Giving topic presentations.

  • Gaining an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals.

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in neurology.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
