Information about this clinical experience:
You will be under the supervision of a board-certified internal medicine physician who has an extensive background in teaching internal medicine residents and health professions students. The preceptor was an Associate Program Director of an IMG-friendly residency program in the Washington DC/Baltimore region for over 10 years. The attending is on staff at Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center.
The preceptor is known for having a wonderful bedside manner and is well regarded for the amount of time spent with patients. Attentive listening, genuine care and concern, and a warm, empathetic demeanor are hallmarks of this doctor’s bedside manner. The physician will be an excellent role model for rotators seeking to refine their skills in delivering patient-centered care.
In the outpatient clinic, rotators will encounter a range of patients with acute complaints and chronic conditions. Rotators will have the chance to exercise their problem-solving skills to make differential diagnoses, formulate assessments, and develop treatment plans. Refining important critical thinking skills for the practice of medicine will be a priority in this experience.
The preceptor is a strong proponent of empowering patients through education. Through this experience, you will be able to further develop your own skills in educating patients.
After one week of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient encounters and learn the following under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories under supervision.
Performing exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Writing notes (although you will not enter notes in the EMR, you will be asked to write simulated notes on paper for the attending to review)
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Educating patients under supervision.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in internal medicine.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
Dr. X’s rotation was extremely helpful in developing my clinical acumen with infectious diseases and rounding on multiple patients in a day. I learned how to manage patients in a multidisciplinary manner daily from an infectious point of view
