One half of every day will be spent at the practice in independent study reviewing slides. You will have your own microscope as well as access to standard dermatopathology textbooks and scientific journals. In the first week, your focus will be on the normal histology of the skin and developing skills and confidence in naming and identifying the structures of the skin, including the layers that make up the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, the different cell types, and skin appendages. In the following weeks, you will gain experience in differentiating normal from abnormal, developing differential diagnoses, and interpreting slides in the context of the patient's clinical presentation.
In the other half of the day, you will participate in dermatopathology sign out with the attending and observation of the grossing of specimens. To make the most of this valuable learning opportunity, we recommend that you read or view the following resources:

In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
