Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Dermatopathology in Houston

Specialties: Dermatology, Pathology

Location: Houston

Price:

Hospital Letterhead: No

Faculty Appointment: Yes - McGovern Medical School at UT Health

Information about this clinical experience:

You will work directly with a physician who is an experienced educator. The preceptor holds a faculty appointment at McGovern Medical School at UT Health (Associate Clinical Professor). Through the years, the physician has been actively involved in the education of residents from Baylor, UT Houston, UTMB, and MD Anderson Cancer Center.

One half of every day will be spent at the practice in independent study reviewing slides. You will have your own microscope as well as access to standard dermatopathology textbooks and scientific journals. In the first week, your focus will be on the normal histology of the skin and developing skills and confidence in naming and identifying the structures of the skin, including the layers that make up the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, the different cell types, and skin appendages. In the following weeks, you will gain experience in differentiating normal from abnormal, developing differential diagnoses, and interpreting slides in the context of the patient's clinical presentation.

In the other half of the day, you will participate in dermatopathology sign out with the attending and observation of the grossing of specimens. To make the most of this valuable learning opportunity, we recommend that you read or view the following resources:

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in pathology or dermatology should consider this rotation.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Testimonials

Dr. X is extremely knowledgeable and obviously an expert in dermatopathology with decades of experience. Sign-out every morning was an invaluable learning experience. Dr. X provided extensive and detailed explanations of what we saw on each slide. The doctor's instruction allowed me to gain basic familiarity with and competence in recognizing the most common conditions in dermatopathology during the 4 weeks of my rotation, which I'm immensely grateful for. A large part of the rotation consisted of self-study, with an abundance of study slides and textbooks available, plus your own microscope and desktop computer. Dr. X always welcomed any questions I had. The doctor also sees patients, which students can observe if desired (note: a good portion of patient encounters takes place in Spanish). Additionally, research opportunities (e.g. case reports) are possible upon discussion.
