Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Cardiology in Las Vegas in Las Vegas

Specialties: Cardiology

Location: Las Vegas

Price:

Hospital Letterhead: No

Faculty Appointment: Yes - Mountainview Hospital

Information about this clinical experience:

This rotation will be under the supervision of a board-certified cardiologist. The physician holds hospital appointments at Sunrise Health System and Summerlin Hospital Medical Center. The attending has an extensive background in teaching U.S. and international medical students/graduates, as well as residents.  Presently, the preceptor is only involved in teaching medical students through a faculty appointment at an osteopathic medical school.

In this doctor’s outpatient practice, 15-20 patients are typically seen per day. This physician is known for spending time with each patient to acquire a strong understanding of their concerns and issues. This emphasis on history-taking and physical exam is essential to the proper practice of medicine but the evidence indicates that overuse of laboratory and other diagnostic testing has led to an erosion of these essential clinical skills.

Through this experience, you will be reminded what it means to be a “doctor.” You will learn to work up patients thoroughly, gather the appropriate information from the history and exam, and synthesize the data to form diagnoses, assessments, and plans. The lost art of cardiac auscultation will be taught; rotators will understand that sophisticated technology is not a substitute for the stethoscope. That said, this physician does embrace technology so you will have the opportunity to learn the indications for ordering electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, stress tests, and other studies, and how to interpret these tests.

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:

  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in cardiology.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Testimonials

This rotation has been such a valuable opportunity—not only to deepen my medical knowledge, but also to learn how to interact with patients and caregivers in a primary care setting. Since it was my first rotation, I wasn’t yet comfortable speaking in English, but I truly appreciated how patient and encouraging you were throughout. Following you made me want to become a better doctor myself.
