Where will this rotation take place: This hands-on outpatient rotation will take place in Tampa, Florida.

Hours: Monday - Thursday 9 AM - 6:30 PM

What you will do: You will be under the supervision of a board-certified pediatric pulmonologist. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida School of Medicine. He is on staff at St. Joseph's Children Hospital. He is also Clinical Associate Professor at the Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has been heavily involved in the education of medical students, nurse practitioner students, and international medical graduates.

He completed his residency training in pediatrics in the Midwest where he was named Chief Resident. For excellence as a resident, he received the Outstanding Pediatric Resident Award. Following a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology and critical care, he moved to Tampa where he has been practicing for nearly 30 years. He is widely regarded for excellence in patient care, having been named Best Pediatric Pulmonologist in America.

You will see patients in his office. After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient care (please note that this is not a shadowing observership; you will be actively involved in patient care):

  • You will take patient histories.

  • You will perform exams under the physician's supervision.

  • You will present patients.

  • You will research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • You will educate patients.

  • You will teach other team members. Since he has many premedical students working in his office, there are many opportunities to teach.

  • You will spend time with other healthcare professionals in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

Please note that this is largely a clinical experience.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking hands-on patient care experience in pediatrics or pulmonology.

Will a letter of recommendation be offered: Yes, assuming that the IMG meets the expectations of the rotation. Dr. Desai will provide the physician with guidelines which will improve the quality of the letter. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
