Tele-Rotation in Internal Medicine in Telerotation

Information about this clinical experience:

This is an outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a dedicated physician educator who is board-certified in internal medicine. The physician has a background in teaching, having previously held a faculty appointment at Rutgers Medical School. The preceptor is on staff at several hospitals within the Atlantic Health System.

This clinical experience will expose you to a wide range of internal medicine problems. Through Zoom, you will observe numerous outpatient encounters with patients presenting with a range of acute complaints and chronic conditions. During these encounters, you may have opportunities to ask patients a few questions. At times, the preceptor may position the laptop camera in such a way that it allows rotators to view the EMR. In this way, students become more familiar with the EMR and how a seasoned clinician navigates through it and documents information. Of note, in a typical day, 40-60 patients are seen in the clinic.

On Fridays, rotators will engage in independent learning. Cases will be assigned of patients presenting to the emergency department or office with interesting presentations. Students will be asked to formulate differential diagnoses and decide on next steps in the evaluation of these patients, including which tests to order. The preceptor will discuss these cases with rotators during the following week. Rotators will be expected to provide a rationale for their recommendations. The preceptor will also deliver mini lectures throughout the week on common internal medicine topics.

From a logistical standpoint, rotators will receive a Zoom link every morning that will provide access to morning patient encounters and another Zoom link just prior to seeing afternoon patients.
