Tele-Rotation in Internal Medicine in Telerotation
Specialties: Internal Medicine
Location: Telerotation
Price:
Hospital Letterhead: No
Faculty Appointment: No
Information about this clinical experience:
This is an outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a dedicated physician educator who is board-certified in internal medicine. The physician has a background in teaching, having previously held a faculty appointment at Rutgers Medical School. The preceptor is on staff at several hospitals within the Atlantic Health System.
This clinical experience will expose you to a wide range of internal medicine problems. Through Zoom, you will observe numerous outpatient encounters with patients presenting with a range of acute complaints and chronic conditions. During these encounters, you may have opportunities to ask patients a few questions. At times, the preceptor may position the laptop camera in such a way that it allows rotators to view the EMR. In this way, students become more familiar with the EMR and how a seasoned clinician navigates through it and documents information. Of note, in a typical day, 40-60 patients are seen in the clinic.
On Fridays, rotators will engage in independent learning. Cases will be assigned of patients presenting to the emergency department or office with interesting presentations. Students will be asked to formulate differential diagnoses and decide on next steps in the evaluation of these patients, including which tests to order. The preceptor will discuss these cases with rotators during the following week. Rotators will be expected to provide a rationale for their recommendations. The preceptor will also deliver mini lectures throughout the week on common internal medicine topics.
From a logistical standpoint, rotators will receive a Zoom link every morning that will provide access to morning patient encounters and another Zoom link just prior to seeing afternoon patients.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking clinical experience in Internal Medicine.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
Dr. X is an exceptional mentor - highly focused, organized, and committed to both patient care and education. The doctor has a very welcoming team which makes it easy to integrate and participate meaningfully. Dr. X encourages learning, provides a lot of autonomy, and genuinely enjoys sharing clinical reasoning and encourages open discussion. Dr. X's passion for teaching and for medicine is evident in every conversation, and I have had discussions with Dr. X and the team that often extended beyond medicine. The doctor is very empathetic, cares deeply about patients, and takes the time to explain plans with clarity. I consider myself lucky to have been able to learn from Dr. X and can only hope that in the future I can live up to the example the doctor sets.
