Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Pulmonology in Tampa

Information about this clinical experience:

This is an outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a physician who is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary, and sleep medicine. The doctor is an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Florida. The physician has a tremendous amount of experience educating medical students, having precepted students from University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine over a period of many years. The doctor holds hospital privileges at Memorial Hospital of Tampa.

In this practice, you will see a wide range of pulmonary conditions. You will learn how to evaluate these patients, make diagnoses, order appropriate tests, and even observe tests/procedures that are performed in the office, including pulmonary function testing. Because there is a sleep lab at each of the locations, students will become familiar with common sleep disorders, how these conditions are diagnosed through appropriate testing, and the typical treatment plans. 

Although this physician is specialized in pulmonary and sleep medicine, the doctor believes strongly in taking care of the whole patient. As a result, learners will have the opportunity to see how specialists can continue to provide general medical care.

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:

• Taking patient histories under supervision.

• Examining patients under supervision.

• Presenting patients.

• Writing or entering clinic or progress notes (eClinicalWorks EMR)

• Observing pulmonary procedures including bronchoscopy and PFTs

• Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

• Educating the patient.

• Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

Please note that this is largely a clinical experience. However, for the motivated learner, there may be opportunities to observe or take part in research as this practice participates in clinical trials. These opportunities, if available, will be at the discretion of the preceptor.

Because the practice has multiple clinics, the preceptor is at the main location three days per week. On the other two days, you will perform the same activities listed above with the preceptor's board certified colleague and nurse practitioners. For rotators who have a vehicle, there is the option to accompany the physician to the other locations.
