Information about this clinical experience:

You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. This is a physician who is a dedicated educator with considerable experience in teaching and serves as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. The physician holds a hospital appointment at Cooper University Hospital.


Among the conditions or issues you will encounter in this outpatient practice include:


  • Prenatal care

  • Postpartum care

  • High-risk pregnancy

  • Pelvic pain

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Endometriosis

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding

  • Vaginitis

  • Contraception

  • Urinary incontinence

  • Infertility


During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:


  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Educating patients (students will typically make 1-2 topic presentations)

  • Teaching other team members.


Please note that the preceptor is open to having students take part in scholarly activity or short-term research projects like case reports and other studies. Please note that the availability of the project is at the preceptor's discretion.  If you are interested in such opportunities, please let the preceptor know as early as possible.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in obstetrics and gynecology. Please note that, because of the preferences of this physician's patient population, only female students are eligible to complete this rotation.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
