Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology

What you will do:

(Please note that this rotation will strictly be an observership) You will be under the supervision of a physician board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. After completing residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Harvard Medical School, the preceptor completed two fellowships:

  • Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

  • Reproductive Andrology and Male Infertility

The physician has served as a faculty member in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology at such places as Harvard Medical School, Stanford University School of Medicine, and UCLA School of Medicine. The doctor has published and presented extensively, having authored many articles, abstracts, and book chapters.

What gives the doctor tremendous joy is utilizing experience and knowledge to help people become parents. The physician creates a warm and supportive environment for patients. The doctor's other passion is teaching. The preceptor has been teaching international medical students and graduates for years. The physician considers himself a mentor, and strives to help students reach their goals. During the rotation, the doctor encourages students to write, and has been successful in partnering with students to develop case reports, journal articles, and book chapters.

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision (please note that this experience remains within the regulations of California pertaining to the unlicensed practice of medicine):

  • Female infertility

  • Male infertility

  • Fertility testing

  • Fertility treatment

  • IUI

  • IVF

  • Egg freezing

  • Egg donation

  • Sperm donation

  • Surrogacy

  • Fertility issues in LGBT population

  • Fertility issues in cancer

  • PCOS

You will have the opportunity to observe procedures.

Please note that you will have the opportunity to work with his physician partner who is also board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. This physician is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UCLA School of Medicine, and has been training residents for many years.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking careers in obstetrics and gynecology will find this rotation particularly useful.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Testimonials

"I highly recommend this rotation to all medical students wishing to pursue a career in OB/GYN. Honestly, he is one of the best doctors I have ever rotated with, if not the best, and you will also have the opportunity to rotate with more physicians that work in partner practices. Not only is he an outstanding, knowledgeable doctor but he is also a great mentor, teacher and writer. He will always be available for your questions and will go out of his way to make you feel comfortable and specially make you feel part of the team. He is also very kind and caring towards patients and so are all the other preceptors I was lucky enough to work with...this is a great opportunity to learn more about reproductive endocrinology and infertility subspecialty since in med school we are not trained enough in this area, especially if you are interested in the field. Lastly, if you are willing to do research, there are also many opportunities provided."
