Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Internal Medicine in New York

Information about this clinical experience:

This is an outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a board-certified internist. During this rotation, you will have opportunities to take part in the full spectrum of care given in general internal medicine. This will include visits for acute care, chronic disease, and preventive medicine, including annual exams, vaccinations, and screening for cancer. As an Associate Professor of Medicine at Touro University, the doctor has been actively involved in the education of medical students and residents in the U.S., as well as international medical graduates. The physician holds staff appointments at Lenox Hill Hospital and New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital.


During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:


  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • May have opportunities to deliver talks or presentations about medical topics.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Internal Medicine.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
