Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Internal Medicine in New York
Specialties: Internal Medicine
Location: New York
Price:
Hospital Letterhead: No
Faculty Appointment: Yes - Touro University
Information about this clinical experience:
This is an outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a board-certified internist. During this rotation, you will have opportunities to take part in the full spectrum of care given in general internal medicine. This will include visits for acute care, chronic disease, and preventive medicine, including annual exams, vaccinations, and screening for cancer. As an Associate Professor of Medicine at Touro University, the doctor has been actively involved in the education of medical students and residents in the U.S., as well as international medical graduates. The physician holds staff appointments at Lenox Hill Hospital and New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital.
In this practice, the doctor has given considerable thought to making things easier for patients to access care. For example, there is an in-office ultrasound that makes these examinations more convenient as patients do not need to travel to specialized imaging centers or hospitals. This will be an excellent opportunity for rotators to learn how ultrasound can enhance diagnosis and management in primary care.
For patients requiring consultation with cardiology or gastroenterology, the preceptor has arranged for these specialists to be on site at the clinic on certain days of the month. Easing access to specialists in this manner can reduce barriers to care, allow for faster diagnosis and treatment, and lead to better satisfaction.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
May have opportunities to deliver talks or presentations about medical topics.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Internal Medicine.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
I had a really great experience working with Dr. X during my rotation. It was an ambulatory surgical center and was very busy with a high volume of cases, however, Dr. X always made sure it was a learning environment for me. During the rotation, I spent three days a week in the OR and two days in the outpatient clinic. The OR was quite busy, with around 12–15 surgeries per day, and I had the opportunity to assist in several of them, which was a valuable hands-on experience. One unique aspect of this rotation was the opportunity to be trained by the OR and recovery room nurses on pre-operative, intra-operative, and postoperative patient care, which is something I haven’t experienced as much in other settings and found really helpful.
I also really like how Dr. X made the operating room environment very interactive. The doctor would initiate conversations during cases, ask relevant clinical questions, and encourage me to think through the steps,
and gave me space to share my own ideas, which made the overall experience very engaging. Dr. X was always approachable and took the time to explain things clearly about surgical decision-making. Also, I really appreciate how the doctor always encouraged teamwork during patient care, which i think is very important. Overall, this month-long rotation really shaped me as an aspiring surgeon, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work with the doctor. Dr. X is a great mentor who genuinely cares about both patients and students. I would definitely recommend this rotation for anyone interested in surgery.
