Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Internal Medicine in New York
Specialties: Internal Medicine
Location: New York
Price:
Hospital Letterhead: No
Faculty Appointment: Yes - Touro University
Information about this clinical experience:
This is an outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a board-certified internist. During this rotation, you will have opportunities to take part in the full spectrum of care given in general internal medicine. This will include visits for acute care, chronic disease, and preventive medicine, including annual exams, vaccinations, and screening for cancer. As an Associate Professor of Medicine at Touro University, the doctor has been actively involved in the education of medical students and residents in the U.S., as well as international medical graduates. The physician holds staff appointments at Lenox Hill Hospital and New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital.
In this practice, the doctor has given considerable thought to making things easier for patients to access care. For example, there is an in-office ultrasound that makes these examinations more convenient as patients do not need to travel to specialized imaging centers or hospitals. This will be an excellent opportunity for rotators to learn how ultrasound can enhance diagnosis and management in primary care.
For patients requiring consultation with cardiology or gastroenterology, the preceptor has arranged for these specialists to be on site at the clinic on certain days of the month. Easing access to specialists in this manner can reduce barriers to care, allow for faster diagnosis and treatment, and lead to better satisfaction.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
May have opportunities to deliver talks or presentations about medical topics.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Internal Medicine.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
If you show interest and confidence the doctor gives you a lot of autonomy. I was alone with the patients and their parents for a lot of the time, yet I always knew the doctor was right next door, which was great. Patients ages range from newborns to 26 year olds and it’s never the same. Although it’s primary care and sometimes they only come for a form fill out, they have rare diseases they live with and it’s always interesting to see how they are doing with their medication.
Since I’m also interested in the administrative part of healthcare, the doctor and I spent a lot of time talking about insurances, private practice, etc. I truly learned a lot. The doctor is faculty in a hospital and sent me the links to get into the resident lectures. So in the morning I would have online lecture with the residents and from 1 to 7 I would be at the clinic.
