Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Internal Medicine in Dallas

Specialties: Internal Medicine

Location: Dallas

Price:

Hospital Letterhead: No

Faculty Appointment: No

Information about this clinical experience:

You will be under the supervision of a board-certified internal medicine physician who is fully invested in providing patient-centered care. Prior to starting an outpatient practice, the preceptor served as a hospitalist at CHRISTUS Health Good Shepherd Medical center. In that role, the physician worked closely with residents in the CHRISTUS Health/Texas A &M University internal medicine residency program.

The doctor sees patients through a direct primary care model. This is a relatively new practice model where patients pay a membership fee to the physician for a certain set of primary care physicians. This model is becoming more popular among physicians as it allows patients to have longer visits, increased access to their physician, and more personalized care. For more information about direct primary care, please visit:

Direct Primary Care | AAFP

On a typical day, you will see 5-7 patients with the preceptor. Although this may seem like a small number, it’s not unusual for an appointment to last as long as one hour. This means that the physician can dive deep into many different issues and ensure the delivery of comprehensive, holistic care. It also means that the preceptor can spend more time with the rotator, covering pertinent teaching points that may not be covered due to lack of time in a high-volume practice.

Through the course of the experience, you will encounter patients presenting with a range of issues, including annual physicals, weight loss, women’s health, acute complaints, chronic disease management, and mental health issues. There will also be a focus on preventive medicine.

A particularly interesting aspect of this physician’s practice is the use of innovative technologies for women’s and men’s health. The office has InMode EmpowerRF which uses radiofrequency energy and electrical muscle stimulation to treat weak pelvic floor muscles, urinary incontinence and other issues. For men experiencing erectile dysfunction, the InMode Apex RF allows treatment with radiofrequency to boost blood flow, stimulate new blood vessels, and rebuild tissue collagen.

Of note, the preceptor serves on the National Faculty for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. Through this role, the physician writes and reviews board certification questions for licensing exams.

You will learn the following under the preceptor’s supervision:

  • Taking patient histories under supervision.

  • Performing physical exams under supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Navigating the EMR (although you will not enter notes, you will be able to access information in the Elation EMR).

  • Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in internal medicine.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
