Information about this clinical experience:
You will be under the supervision of a board-certified internal medicine physician who is on staff at at Presence St. Francis Hospital, Lutheran General Hospital, and North Shore University Hospital. These are hospitals that have internal medicine residency programs. This preceptor is active in the education of internal medicine residents, particularly those from Presence St. Francis Hospital. Residents from the program spend time in the preceptor's practice. The preceptor has also had students rotating in his office from University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Tulane University. The doctor is presently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Rush Medical College.
An interesting aspect of this preceptor's practice is the use of an AI-powered application to record the physician-patient encounter. Using Natural Language Processing, the app listens to the discussion and extracts medically relevant information. Soon after the encounter is complete, the AI drafts an organized clinical note for the preceptor to review, edit, and sign. The use of this innovative new technology allows physicians to be more engaged duirng the encounter through direct eye contact and appreciation of non-verbal cues.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Navigating the EMR (eClinicalWorks)
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Educating patients.
Teaching other team members.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in internal medicine.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
Dr. X is extremely knowledgeable and obviously an expert in dermatopathology with decades of experience. Sign-out every morning was an invaluable learning experience. Dr. X provided extensive and detailed explanations of what we saw on each slide. The doctor's instruction allowed me to gain basic familiarity with and competence in recognizing the most common conditions in dermatopathology during the 4 weeks of my rotation, which I'm immensely grateful for. A large part of the rotation consisted of self-study, with an abundance of study slides and textbooks available, plus your own microscope and desktop computer. Dr. X always welcomed any questions I had. The doctor also sees patients, which students can observe if desired (note: a good portion of patient encounters takes place in Spanish). Additionally, research opportunities (e.g. case reports) are possible upon discussion.
