Information about this clinical experience:
You will be under the supervision of a board-certified internal medicine physician. The doctor holds hospital privileges at Citrus Memorial Hospital and Bayfront Seven Rivers Health. Of note, several years ago, Citrus Memorial Hospital started a new internal medicine residency program. Many of their residents are international medical graduates. Please note that this preceptor is not part of the residency program but rotating in the area may allow for networking with the program.
This physician is a preceptor to medical students from Florida State University as well as PA students from Lincoln Memorial University, and enjoys teaching students. In addition to caring for patients in the office, you may be able to accompany the preceptor to area nursing homes.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories under supervision.
Performing exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Writing notes.
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Educating patients under supervision.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in internal medicine.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
The rotation was very well structured, with ample exposure to both inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. X proved to be an outstanding teacher, not only in guiding us through the medical conditions we encountered but also in providing valuable insights into the residency match process. In the clinical setting, the preceptor encouraged us to take patient histories, engage with the diverse pathologies seen on rounds, and deliver presentations which we discussed in depth. The doctor's rounds were highly collaborative, listened to our ideas, guided our clinical reasoning, and offered constructive feedback that significantly enhanced our learning. Dr. X was also extremely considerate during my preparation for Step 3, encouraging me to balance studying alongside clinical responsibilities. Dr. X's advice as a successful IMG was indispensable, as the doctor provided detailed guidance on the residency application process and even conducted a mock interview with personalized feedback. Overall, anyone who has the opportunity to rotate with Dr. X will benefit greatly from the doctor's kindness, compassion, and dedication to teaching.
