Information about this clinical experience:
This is an outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a highly regarded physician educator who is board-certified in Internal Medicine. The preceptor is involved in the teaching and mentoring of internal medicine residents from the DMC/Huron Valley Hospital as well as students from the Michigan State University School of Osteopathic Medicine and University of Michigan Clinical Nurse Practitioner Program. The doctor holds staff appointments at DMC/Huron Valley Hospital and William Beaumont Hospital - Royal Oak.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Writing or entering clinic progress notes.
Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Be involved in patient education.
Teaching other team members.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
You may have an opportunity to attend an occasional conference at DMC/Huron Valley Hospital.

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Internal Medicine; IMGs seeking careers in family medicine, internal medicine, or other specialties.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

Overall, this rotation offers a highly hands-on learning environment where students can actively participate in inpatient neurology consults and neuro ICU patient care. It provides a great opportunity to understand the day-to-day responsibilities of neurology residents and become familiar with the workflow of an inpatient neurology service.
The attendings are highly knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely willing to teach, particularly when it comes to neuroimaging interpretation. If you fully dedicate yourself to daily patient care and take the time to consolidate what you've learned, you'll become much more confident in approaching common neurological presentations, including stroke, seizures, syncope, and dizziness.
I would highly recommend this rotation to medical students interested in pursuing neurology residency in the US. To make the most of the experience, however, I would suggest completing at least one or two clinical rotations beforehand, as some prior clinical exposure will help you adapt more quickly and benefit more from the learning opportunities.
