Information about this clinical experience:
You will be under the supervision of a board-certified internal medicine physician who has an extensive background in teaching internal medicine residents and medical students. The preceptor is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at two medical schools - New York Medical College and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. The attending is on staff at multiple hospitals in the area, including Hackensack Meridian Health and St. Joseph’s Health. From time to time, the preceptor has residents rotating through the practice.
The preceptor is known for having a wonderful bedside manner and is well regarded for the amount of time spent with patients and making patients feel genuinely cared for and respected. Patients describe this physician as being “exceptional”, “truly caring”, and an “angel.” The physician will be an excellent role model for rotators seeking to refine their skills in delivering patient-centered care.
In the outpatient clinic, rotators will encounter a range of patients with acute complaints and chronic conditions. Rotators will have the chance to exercise their problem-solving skills to make differential diagnoses, formulate assessments, and develop treatment plans. Refining important critical thinking skills for the practice of medicine will be a priority in this experience.
The preceptor is a strong proponent of empowering patients through education. Through this experience, you will be able to further develop your own skills in educating patients.
After one week of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient encounters and learn the following under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories under supervision.
Performing exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Entering information in the EMR (Athena)
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Educating patients under supervision.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
