Information about this clinical experience:

This is a fully outpatient clinical experience during which you will be actively involved in patient encounters under the supervision of a physician who is board certified in Internal Medicine. The preceptor holds hospital privileges at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center. The physician has been educating international medical graduates for over 20 years and considers it a joy to help these future doctors reach their professional goals.

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:

Taking patient histories under supervision.
Examining patients under supervision.
Presenting patients.
Helping to write or enter notes.
Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Teaching other team members.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Internal Medicine.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

This outpatient experience was with a physician who is passionate about teaching and mentoring, and from day one the doctor has “thrown me to the fire” as the doctor liked to say, and allowed me to do the full H&P of 2-3 patients depending on schedule. Than I presented the case, did the write-up, and on another day (usually monday) we had a full morning for thoughtful and constructive feedback (this was fantastic, cannot emphasize this enough). We also hang out on other projects he had on the week, which I learned a lot about what is involved into the business of integrative health and how to innovate in private practice. Also really enjoyed observing the colonoscopies and upper endoscopies at the end of Friday morning. Such an incredible human being with a whole-person view of the patient, an inspiration figure for me.
