Information about this clinical experience:
This is an outpatient US clinical experience during which you will be under the supervision of a physician who is board certified in Family Medicine. The preceptor holds hospital privileges at the University of Maryland Medical System and Luminis Health. For years, the doctor has been actively involved in the education of international medical students from different schools. The preceptor describes his rotation in the following manner:
I have been in practice for over 30 years...I have a large amount of patients with different diagnoses so students have a very wide spectrum to learn from. Our staff is very friendly, and are willing to learn from and work with new students. They value the opportunity.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories under supervision.
Examining patients under supervision.
Presenting patients.
Having opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Educating the patient.
Teaching other team members.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Family Medicine.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
Dr. X was genuinely one of the best preceptors I’ve had. From day one, the doctor made me feel comfortable asking questions and never made me feel like I was in the way, even when the clinic got busy. Dr. X gave me real opportunities to be hands-on with patient care instead of just watching from the sidelines, which made a huge difference in how much I actually learned.
Over the rotation I got to take histories, help with exams, and see a good range of gynecologic and obstetric cases in the outpatient setting. What stood out most was how patient Dr. X was with teaching. The doctor would take the time to explain the clinical reasoning, answer whatever I asked, and give me honest feedback that actually helped me improve. I left this rotation feeling a lot more confident in my clinical skills, and I’m really grateful I got to learn from Dr. X.
