Information about this clinical experience:
This is an outpatient US clinical experience during which you will be under the supervision of a physician who is board certified in Family Medicine. The preceptor holds hospital privileges at the University of Maryland Medical System and Luminis Health. For years, the doctor has been actively involved in the education of international medical students from different schools. The preceptor describes his rotation in the following manner:
I have been in practice for over 30 years...I have a large amount of patients with different diagnoses so students have a very wide spectrum to learn from. Our staff is very friendly, and are willing to learn from and work with new students. They value the opportunity.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories under supervision.
Examining patients under supervision.
Presenting patients.
Having opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Educating the patient.
Teaching other team members.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Family Medicine.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
There are many learning activities such as daily journal discussions and presentation of didactic topics via PowerPoint. The expectation is to keep up with the readings corresponding with daily cases and to progress with suggesting differentials and initial immunohistochemical panels, even with advanced oncology cases...Training level didactic lectures given by the preceptor are extremely helpful and appropriate for pathology candidates. Although most of the daily cases have a GI/Liver & pancreatobiliary focus there is
plenty of exposure to complex lung, gynecological and breast pathology cases to name a few...The heart of the rotation is being taught and guided by a world-class pathologist...As a fun and caring preceptor, the doctor took time to get to know my background, my path in pursuing pathology training, and incorporated me into the team of departmental fellows. The doctor will restore your passion for pathology and leave you optimistic that you can chase your dreams...This is a top-tier observership!
