Information about this clinical experience:
This is an outpatient US clinical experience during which you will be under the supervision of a physician who is board certified in Family Medicine. As a family medicine physician, this preceptor believes in providing comprehensive care to patients in the practice. Patients of all ages are seen for a range of reasons, including acute care visits, chronic disease monitoring, and screening and prevention.
To bring whole person care to the patients in the practice, the physician also has on-site providers in other specialties, including a pediatrician, gynecologist, and plastic surgeon. By concentrating these services in one location, it makes access to care considerably easier for patients. And for rotators, this is an excellent opportunity to see how a family medicine physician can collaborate with colleagues in different specialties to bring personalized care to patients. Please note that you can spend time with these other providers to enrich your experience.
The doctor does not believe in making surface level treatment recommendations. A priority is placed on understanding the basis for a patient’s symptom, condition, or disease. By understanding the factors that are causing the problem, an approach can be developed to tackle the issue at its roots. Achieving best outcomes in health also requires the development of strong physician-patient relationships. This physician is a strong believer in establishing these types of relationships. Rotators will see how a seasoned physician forges these relationships and how the strength of those relationships can improve adherence and patient satisfaction.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories under supervision.
Examining patients under supervision.
Presenting patients.
Writing or entering clinic or progress notes.
Having opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Educating the patient.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Family Medicine.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
Dr. X provided me with a 100% hands-on experience. Every day, I had the opportunity to present cases, anesthesia plans, and major concerns, and the doctor would offer valuable suggestions based on my presentation. For patients with simpler conditions, the doctor would ask me about the pharmacological effects of commonly used anesthetic drugs and the management of common anesthesia complications during surgery. For patients with more complex conditions or complicated surgeries, Dr. X would thoroughly explain the surgical procedures and help me identify the most critical points to focus on. These insights into anesthesia management have been incredibly helpful...in addition, the doctor offered valuable advice for my future residency application, such as achieving a high Step 2 CK score, engaging in research, and improving my English communication skills. Dr. X even taught me how to engage in small talk with colleagues.
