Location: St. Louis

Hospital Letterhead: No
Faculty Appointment: No
Information about this clinical experience:
You will be under the supervision of a board-certified dermatologist who completed dermatology residency at Washington University in St. Louis. The preceptor has hospital privileges at Missouri Baptist Medical Center and SSM Health Missouri.
The physician is the recipient of grants from the American Academy of Dermatology and American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. The physician also enjoys speaking about important issues in dermatology, and has given talks at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting. The doctor is widely regarded as an excellent educator, and makes teaching a priority in the office.
In the practice, you will also have the opportunity to work with several other staff members, including another dermatologist and a nurse practitioner. As many dermatologists have NPs or PAs, this will allow you to see the role these mid-level providers play in the practice of dermatology.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Presenting patients.
Observing surgeries.
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Delivering talks about important topics.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
There may be an opportunity to attend Grand Rounds on Thursdays in the Department of Dermatology but the availability of this opportunity will be at the discretion of the preceptor.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in dermatology. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics will find this rotation particularly useful as skin problems are very common in primary care.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Dr. X is a very knowledgeable nephrologist and an inspiring mentor. Dr. X's nephrology knowledge is not just evident, it’s contagious...I found myself developing a genuine love for the field, and for the first time, I am seriously considering nephrology as a career option, something that had never crossed my mind before...Dr. X's teaching style combined complex medical concepts with patient care, making the most difficult nephrology topics accessible and fascinating...Additionally, this rotation provided substantial hands-on experience. Dr. X encouraged me to take an active role in patient care, from conducting independent assessments to contributing to care plans...The doctor fostered collaboration, allowing me to engage with residents and other healthcare professionals, which extended my understanding of the hospital system and enriched my professional network. Dr. X entrusted me with presenting nephrology topics to the residents. It happened twice weekly, and it was a chance of not only staying updated with the new research
findings, but also improving my confidence to speak to public and discuss cases.
