Information about this clinical experience:
You will be working with a physician who has been practicing cardiology for several decades. This cardiologist has multiple board certifications within the specialty, including interventional cardiology, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology. The preceptor is on staff at hospitals within the Abrazo Health Systems and is a dedicated teacher. Much of this physician’s career was spent in New Jersey where the preceptor served as teaching faculty for students and residents. Having recently moved to Phoenix, the physician is now eager to resume teaching.
Given this physician’s expertise, you will be exposed to a range of cardiac conditions. You will encounter patients for acute visits and chronic disease management. The priority will be on developing evidence-based approaches to the evaluation and management of patients presenting with a variety of symptoms and conditions. You will learn the indications and contraindications of different cardiac tests and procedures as well acquire skills in the interpretation of these tests. This preceptor will encourage you to synthesize information from patient encounters to form assessments and plans. This emphasis on clinical reasoning will help you prepare for your role as a resident.

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine since cardiology problems are commonly encountered in these specialties.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
