Information about this clinical experience:

You will be working with a physician who has been practicing cardiology for several decades. This cardiologist has multiple board certifications within the specialty, including interventional cardiology, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology. The preceptor is on staff at hospitals within the Abrazo Health Systems and is a dedicated teacher.  Much of this physician’s career was spent in New Jersey where the preceptor served as teaching faculty for students and residents. Having recently moved to Phoenix, the physician is now eager to resume teaching.

Given this physician’s expertise, you will be exposed to a range of cardiac conditions. You will encounter patients for acute visits and chronic disease management. The priority will be on developing evidence-based approaches to the evaluation and management of patients presenting with a variety of symptoms and conditions. You will learn the indications and contraindications of different cardiac tests and procedures as well acquire skills in the interpretation of these tests. This preceptor will encourage you to synthesize information from patient encounters to form assessments and plans. This emphasis on clinical reasoning will help you prepare for your role as a resident.

The physician is known for practicing patient-centered care. Patients have described this doctor as being thorough, compassionate, and respectful. The preceptor takes pride in forming strong relationships with patients and being a partner in their care.

  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine since cardiology problems are commonly encountered in these specialties.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Testimonials

My family medicine rotation with Dr. X at Island Primary Medical Care was a valuable and rewarding learning experience. Dr. X is a thorough, compassionate, and dedicated physician who models patient-centered care. The doctor creates a welcoming learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, discussing clinical reasoning, and learning from experiences. Dr. X provides guidance with patience and respect, helping learners build confidence while maintaining high standards of patient care.

The rotation offered meaningful participation in outpatient family medicine, including history taking, physical examinations, discussion of differential diagnoses and treatment plans, preventive screening, and patient counseling. Exposure to chronic disease management, cognitive and mental health screening, and advance care planning helped me appreciate the breadth of family medicine.

Working alongside the office team strengthened my understanding of clinical workflows, teamwork, and care coordination. Above all, observing Dr. X's thoughtful attention to patients reinforced the importance of compassion, clear communication, and continuity of care. I am grateful for Dr. X's mentorship and would highly recommend this rotation to learners interested in family medicine.
