Inpatient/Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Urology in Fresno in Fresno

Specialties: Urology

Location: Fresno

Price:

Hospital Letterhead: Yes

Faculty Appointment: No

Information about this clinical experience:

This is an inpatient and outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in urology with several decades of experience practicing in the specialty. The physician is on staff at hospitals within the Trinity Health and Community Medical Centers Health Systems and holds several leadership positions at these hospitals, serving as Head of General Surgery at one facility and Director of Urology at another facility. The preceptor has considerable experience serving as an educator, having taught U.S. medical students and residents.

As the specialty combines the management of medical conditions with surgical conditions, you will spend ample time during this experience in the operating room. This will be an opportunity for you to understand indications for surgery, operative techniques and approaches, and postoperative care.

In the clinic, you will become familiar with the proper approach to evaluating patients with a range of urologic symptoms and conditions, including scrotal pain and swelling, urinary incontinence, hematuria, BPH, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, erectile dysfunction, hypogonadism, and kidney stones. The American Urological Association has created a medical student curriculum that we recommend you following during this clinical experience. It will ensue that you have a strong understanding of the core principles and practices of urology. You can access this curriculum at the following website:

American Urological Association Medical Student Curriculum

We also recommend that you read the following account of a student’s perspective from her urology rotation to get a sense of a typical urology experience in the U.S.:

How to Succeed in Your Urology Rotation: Tips for Medical Students

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:

  • Taking patient histories.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Observing a variety of surgeries in the operating room (scrubbing in is permitted).

  • Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

As a result of hospital policies, inpatient activities will be more observational.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in urology or general surgery. Of note, some general surgery residency programs offer or require their residents to complete a urology rotation during their training. In addition, a urology rotation can provide valuable surgical experience and foundational knowledge that are relevant to a future career in general surgery.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
