Specialties: Obstetrics & Gynecology

Location: Chicago

Hospital Letterhead: No

Faculty Appointment: No

Information about this clinical experience:

You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. This is a physician with considerable experience in teaching and is involved in the education of residents from the Ascension Illinois obstetrics and gynecology residency program. This attending interacts with residents in the operating room. This physician holds a hospital appointment at Ascension Illinois.

You will spend time in the outpatient clinic and hospital. In the clinic, the volume of patients seen on a typical day is approximately 15 patients. In the hospital, you will accompany the physician to the operating room for gynecologic cases. Rotators can expect to visit the hospital at least 2-3 times over the course of a four-week rotation.

Among the conditions or issues you will encounter in this practice include:

  • Pelvic pain

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Endometriosis

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding

  • Vaginitis

  • Contraception

  • Urinary incontinence

  • Infertility

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:

  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Developing an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals.

Please note that this physician no longer delivers babies or perform cesarean sections.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in obstetrics and gynecology. Please note that, because of the preferences of this physician's patient population, only female students are eligible to complete this rotation.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft. In the 2024-2025 application cycle, many obstetrics and gynecology residency programs asked applicants to submit one standardized letter of evaluation. Please note that this preceptor is willing to write a SLOE for rotators.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Testimonials

My family medicine rotation with Dr. X at Island Primary Medical Care was a valuable and rewarding learning experience. Dr. X is a thorough, compassionate, and dedicated physician who models patient-centered care. The doctor creates a welcoming learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, discussing clinical reasoning, and learning from experiences. Dr. X provides guidance with patience and respect, helping learners build confidence while maintaining high standards of patient care.

The rotation offered meaningful participation in outpatient family medicine, including history taking, physical examinations, discussion of differential diagnoses and treatment plans, preventive screening, and patient counseling. Exposure to chronic disease management, cognitive and mental health screening, and advance care planning helped me appreciate the breadth of family medicine.

Working alongside the office team strengthened my understanding of clinical workflows, teamwork, and care coordination. Above all, observing Dr. X's thoughtful attention to patients reinforced the importance of compassion, clear communication, and continuity of care. I am grateful for Dr. X's mentorship and would highly recommend this rotation to learners interested in family medicine.
