Inpatient/Outpatient US clinical Experience in Nephrology in Houston

Specialties: Nephrology

Location: Houston

Price:

Hospital Letterhead: Yes

Faculty Appointment: Yes - Baylor College of Medicine

Information about this clinical experience:

This is a combined inpatient and outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a nephrologist who is a Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine. During fellowship training completed at Baylor, the preceptor was regarded as one of the program's finest teachers.

As you encounter patients with diverse renal problems in the clinic, dialysis unit, and hospital, you will learn how to take a focused or comprehensive history and exam depending upon the situation. You will be asked to interpret diagnostic studies in the context of the patient's clinical presentation and the attending will help you appreciate the limitations of these tests.

With end-stage renal disease patients approaching or on dialysis, you will learn not only about medical aspects of their disease but also psychosocial considerations, including the adjustments that patients must make when dealing with chronic illness and the effects of the illness on mental health.

The doctor will be fully engaged with you and, at times, will push you out of your comfort zone. This is done in a gentle but supportive way so that you will be ready to handle the challenging situations you will inevitably encounter as a resident.

Because this preceptor believes that all students need to be skilled in presenting patients, you will have many opportunities to practice, deliver, and refine your oral case presentations.

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:

  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Writing or entering progress notes in the EMR.

  • Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Being involved in patient education.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine or internal medicine will find this rotation particularly useful since problems involving the kidney are common in outpatient practice.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Testimonials

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. X for the invaluable mentorship and support provided during my first Family Medicine clinical experience in Atlanta. From the moment I arrived in the United States and stepped into the clinic, Dr. X created an exceptional learning environment. The doctor is highly knowledgeable, resourceful, professional, and approachable. The kindness extends not only to patients but also to learners, colleagues, and every member of the clinic staff. Beyond being an outstanding physician, Dr. X is also a compassionate father figure who treated me with warmth, patience, and genuine care.

As an international physician entering a new healthcare system, I initially faced challenges related to cultural differences, language barriers, and unfamiliar clinical workflows. Dr. X helped me navigate these obstacles and guided me through the complexities of the U.S. healthcare system. The mentorship enabled me to adapt quickly to the American medical environment and, most importantly, helped me rebuild my confidence as a physician.

I am currently participating in my second Family Medicine program in Philadelphia. Thanks to the solid foundation established during my time with Dr. X, I entered this new program with confidence from day one. I was able to integrate smoothly into the clinical team and perform at a level that earned the trust and respect of senior physicians early in the rotation. Much of this success can be attributed to the preparation and guidance I received from Dr. X.

Overall, Dr. X is an exceptional mentor, educator, and physician. Dr. X's dedication to teaching, clinical excellence, and genuine concern for the success of trainees make the doctor a role model for medical education. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. X as a mentor and clinical teacher. I will always be grateful for the doctor's guidance, and I hope to maintain contact with the doctor for many years to come. Dr. X's influence has played a significant role in my professional growth and transition into the U.S. healthcare system. Highest recommendation.
