Inpatient/Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Family Medicine in Houston

Specialties: Family Medicine

Location: Houston

Price:

Hospital Letterhead: No

Faculty Appointment: Yes - University of Houston College of Medicine

Information about this clinical experience:

This is an inpatient and outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a board-certified family medicine physician. This attending is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Houston College of Medicine and has extensive experience precepting medical students in this role.

In addition to spending time in the clinic and hospital, you may have the opportunity to join the physician in the care of hospice patients and make house calls. The physician also performs procedures in the practice, and this will be an excellent chance for you to observe the range of procedures that a typical family medicine physician performs.

The inpatient component will take place at a rehabilitation hospital. This is a hospital that specializes in the rehabilitation of patients recovering from acute illnesses and injuries. Patients seen at this hospital are medically complex with a wide range of issues such as brain injury, neurological disorders, cardiopulmonary conditions, and stroke. Some patients are recovering from surgery. The hospital has specialized personnel such as physical, occupational, and speech therapists to support patients in the recovery process.

Another part of this experience is wound care. Since wound care receives relatively little attention during medical school education, this will be an excellent opportunity to learn how different wounds are evaluated and managed.

The physician is also active in local medical societies and is open to taking students to their meetings. This will allow you to see how a group of physicians comes together to discuss important issues of the day, advocate for change, and support one another.

Please note that 30-40% of patients seen in the practice are Spanish-speaking.

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:

  • Taking patient histories under supervision

  • Presenting patients

  • Writing or entering notes in the EMR

  • Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

  • The activities above will mostly take place in the outpatient setting. As a result of hospital policies, inpatient activities will be more observational.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Family Medicine.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Testimonials

I had a really great experience working with Dr. X during my rotation. It was an ambulatory surgical center and was very busy with a high volume of cases, however, Dr. X always made sure it was a learning environment for me. During the rotation, I spent three days a week in the OR and two days in the outpatient clinic. The OR was quite busy, with around 12–15 surgeries per day, and I had the opportunity to assist in several of them, which was a valuable hands-on experience. One unique aspect of this rotation was the opportunity to be trained by the OR and recovery room nurses on pre-operative, intra-operative, and postoperative patient care, which is something I haven’t experienced as much in other settings and found really helpful.

I also really like how Dr. X made the operating room environment very interactive. The doctor would initiate conversations during cases, ask relevant clinical questions, and encourage me to think through the steps,
and gave me space to share my own ideas, which made the overall experience very engaging. Dr. X was always approachable and took the time to explain things clearly about surgical decision-making. Also, I really appreciate how the doctor always encouraged teamwork during patient care, which i think is very important. Overall, this month-long rotation really shaped me as an aspiring surgeon, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work with the doctor. Dr. X is a great mentor who genuinely cares about both patients and students. I would definitely recommend this rotation for anyone interested in surgery.
