Information about this clinical experience:
You will be under the supervision of a cardiologist who is an experienced educator, having previously been involved in medical student and resident (transitional year and internal medicine) education. The physician has taught students from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Rocky Vista College of Osteopathic Medicine. The doctor holds staff appointments at Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center, North Suburban Hospital, Medical Center of Aurora, and Sky Ridge Medical Center.
You will see patients in the office and in the hospital. Hospital rounds will occur primarily in the mornings before seeing patients in the office. Please note that approximately for one day per week you will spend time with one of the preceptor's colleagues in the practice.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Educating patients.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.
The activities above will mostly take place in the outpatient setting. As a result of hospital policies, inpatient activities will be more observational.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine or internal medicine will find this rotation particularly useful since cardiology problems are common in outpatient and inpatient practice.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
Dr. X is an exceptional ICU preceptor who creates a highly personalized and engaging learning experience. The doctor takes the time to understand my individual goals and tailors the rotation to focus on areas of interest and growth. The preceptor's teaching style is both thorough and approachable, the doctor explains complex critical care concepts clearly, connects them to real clinical scenarios, and challenges students to think deeply about pathophysiology and management decisions. Dr. X fosters an ideal balance of guidance and autonomy, encouraging students to take ownership of patient care while always providing thoughtful feedback and support. The doctor's mphasis on reasoning through each intervention and understanding the “why” behind ICU decisions makes the learning experience both intellectually stimulating and clinically valuable. Overall, this rotation under Dr. X’s mentorship is incredibly rewarding and provides outstanding preparation for future clinical practice.
