Combined Inpatient and Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology in Newark

Information about this clinical experience:

You will be under the supervision of a physician board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. This is a well-regarded physician who is the recipient of multiple teaching awards. The preceptor is on staff at several hospitals, including Jersey City Medical Center. 

This physician has had extensive experience practicing medicine as an obstetrician and gynecologist and is involved in providing the full range of care in the specialty. In the office, rotators can expect to see patients with a variety of obstetric and gynecologic issues. Students will learn how to evaluate patients with different concerns, formulate diagnoses, and establish treatment plans. No matter the reason for the visit, students will be able to see in action how a seasoned practitioner in the field delivers highly personalized and compassionate care. Of note, procedures are performed in the clinic including colposcopy and IUD insertion, giving students insight into how these procedures are performed in an outpatient setting.

Among the conditions or concerns you will encounter in this outpatient practice include:

• Prenatal care

• Postpartum care

• High-risk pregnancy

• Pelvic pain

• Uterine fibroids

• Endometriosis

• Abnormal uterine bleeding

• Heavy menstrual bleeding

• Vaginitis

• Contraception

• Urinary incontinence

• Infertility

In the hospital, rotators will accompany the preceptor for rounds and into the operating room. The attending is an accomplished surgeon, trained in open, minimally invasive, and robotic surgery. There may be opportunities to go to Labor and Delivery - on average, there will be about ten deliveries over a four-week period. In the hospital, there may be opportunities to spend time with residents and fellows. 

Students will be asked to complete reading assignments periodically. The preceptor will meet with the students to discuss these topics.

After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient encounters and learn the following under the preceptor’s supervision:

• Taking patient histories under supervision.

• Performing exams under the physician's supervision.

• Presenting patients.

• Navigating the EMR (eClinicalWorks in the office and Meditech in the hospital; note rotators will not be writing notes).

• Observing surgeries in the operating room (opportunities to scrub in may be available).

• Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

• Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
