san antonio pediatrics

outpatient US clinical experience
in pediatrics

Specialty: Pediatrics

MD2B Connect Physician ID # 17

Where will this rotation take place: This outpatient US clinical experience will take place 20 minutes northwest of downtown San Antonio.

Hours: Monday - Thursday 9 AM to 5 PM

Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

What you will do: You will be under the supervision of a physician who is on the Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio. She is considered a national expert in pediatric billing and coding, and is a highly sought after speaker. She has taught coding to residents at different pediatric residency programs. She also precepts medical students from the University of Texas San Antonio Medical School in her office.

After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient encounters and learn the following under the preceptor’s supervision:

  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Writing or entering clinic progress notes.

  • Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Educating patients.

  • Delivering talks about important topics.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.

  • Spending time in the front office and billing departments to understand how an office operates.

A unique aspect of this rotation is the education you will receive on billing and coding.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

Part of your rotation will include protected time for you to work on a variety of projects to improve the physician's practice. This may include creation of patient care handouts, material for inclusion in the practice's website, and case reports. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain valuable skills in patient care while taking part in non-patient care related activities that will strengthen your CV for residency. The exact nature of the project will be determined by you and your preceptor.

There may be opportunities to attend Grand Rounds in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Health Science Center - San Antonio. These take place on Friday mornings.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine or pediatrics will find this rotation particularly useful.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation: The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
