Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology
What you will do:
You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. This is a physician who is a dedicated educator with considerable experience in teaching, having taught U.S. medical students, international medical students, and international medical graduates. The preceptor holds hospital privileges at St. Luke's Baptist Hospital and Methodist Healthcare, and is a faculty member at the University of Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine. The physician is known for providing holistic care to his patients with a focus on meeting both physical and psychological needs.
In this practice, students will have the opportunity to be actively involved in patient care, seeing a wide range of problems in general obstetrics and gynecology. Common problems that you will encounter include prenatal and postnatal care, abnormal bleeding, menopause, abdominal/pelvic pain, vaginal discharge, abdominal/pelvic mass, and abnormal Pap smear. Because the preceptor has expertise with the management of infertility, students will also gain an understanding of how to best support patients trying to conceive.
Given that religion and spirituality impact reproductive health and rights, there will be opportunities to discuss such issues through the course of the rotation. As a practitioner of the Catholic faith, the physician does not perform abortions. The preceptor does lecture and teach about oral contraceptives but does not prescribe them. The team will gather regularly to discuss these issues as well as important topics in the field that students must learn.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Giving topic presentations to the team.
Developing an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in obstetrics and gynecology. Please note that, because of the preferences of this physician's patient population, only female students are eligible to complete this rotation.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
