Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Gastroenterology in Miami

Information about this clinical experience:

You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. The preceptor is on staff at the following hospitals: Broward Health and HCA Florida Healthcare. As a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Florida International University, this attending is actively involved in the education of medical students and internal medicine residents at Broward Health, an IMG-friendly residency program in the Miami area.

Your time will be spent in the doctor's outpatient practice where you will also work with two other colleagues, both of whom are board-certified gastoenterologists. One colleague is a core faculty member of a different internal medicine residency program which is also IMG friendly.

The practice will expose rotators to the full breadth of problems encountered in outpatient gastroenterology. Rotators will learn best practices in the evaluation of patients presenting with a wide variety of symptoms, including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constopation, diarrhea, bloating, and difficulty swallowing.

Among the procedures performed by the physicians in this group include screening and diagnostic colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, and small bowel capsule studies. Rotators interested in observing procedures should inform the doctor so that arrangements can be made to accompany the doctor to the surgery center where such procedures are performed.

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:

• Taking patient histories.

• Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.

• Presenting patients.

• Writing or entering clinic progress notes (Care360 EMR)

• Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

• Educating patients.

• Spending time with other healthcare professionals in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.
