Information about this clinical experience:
This is an outpatient experience where you will be under the supervision of a board-certified cardiologist with many years of experience as an educator. The preceptor was a professor with responsibilities of teaching medical students from University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University Charles E Schmidt School of Medicine, and Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine. Although no longer on faculty, the physician remains committed to educating future doctors.
On a typical day, 15-20 patients with a range of cardiovascular problems will be seen in the clinic. The most common conditions encountered include heart failure, coronary artery disease, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation. Rotators are encouraged to read about these topics in advance of and during the clinical experience.
The physician has an excellent bedside manner and is known to spend time with patients making them feel heard and understood. Patients have praised this doctor’s empathy and professionalism as well as sincere and personal interest in their health and wellbeing. For rotators, this will be an excellent opportunity to work with a compassionate and caring role model.
Since the office has the capability of performing electrocardiograms cardiac stress tests, and echocardiograms on-site, students will have the opportunity to learn the proper indications for ordering these tests, observe these procedures, and learn how to interpret them.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine since cardiology problems are commonly encountered in these specialties.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
