Physician ID:

Monday through Thursday 8:30 AM to 5 PM; Friday 8:30 AM to 1 PM

Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

Location: Houston

This inpatient and outpatient US clinical experience will take place in Houston at several different locations, including the Texas Medical Center and one site approximately 10 miles west of downtown.

Inpatient/Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology

What you will do:

You will be under the supervision of a physician board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and high-risk obstetrics. The preceptor has tremendous expertise in the areas of high-risk pregnancy, trauma, and critical care obstetrics.

This is a distinguished physician who has been recognized for contributions to patient care, teaching, and research. The attending has won multiple awards from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology, two of the most prestigious professional society for specialists in the field. The preceptor is actively involved in the education of obstetrics and gynecology residents at two different residency programs. These include:

  • University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (Memorial Hermann Hospital) Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

  • Houston Methodist Hospital Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

The preceptor holds hospital staff appointments at Houston Methodist Hospital, Memorial Hermann Hospital, The Woman's Hospital of Texas, and Texas Children's Pavilion for Women.

You will see patients in the office. You will also accompany the physician to the hospital where you will observe the care of inpatients. In both settings, you will encounter expectant women with high-risk pregnancy due to either maternal or fetal factors.

Because of the complexity of the patients that are seen in this practice (most patients are referred here from other ob/gyn physicians) and the emotional distress that these women are experiencing (i.e., fear, grief, frustration, anger, sadness, and guilt), opportunities to take part in hands-on care will be limited. However, because you will be working with an award-winning educator, you will learn best practices in taking histories, performing exams, and educating patients directly from this preceptor. Past rotators have also enjoyed learning how to perform obstetrical ultrasound.

Please note that there may be opportunities to take part in projects during this rotation such as case reports or research. The availability of these projects is at the discretion of the preceptor. Interested students should talk to the preceptor early in the rotation.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking careers in obstetrics and gynecology will find this rotation particularly useful.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Dr. X is one of the most knowledgeable, dedicated, and companioned physicians I have ever met. He is a true inspiration to all his medical students, and he goes above and beyond to provide them with education, feedback, and help. You can visit the patients in the hospitals and, in some cases, observe the deliveries. He puts much emphasis on continuous education and evidence-based medicine. He actively incorporates you into his research and helps you to get published. I wholeheartedly recommend this rotation to anybody.
