inpatient/outpatient externship

in pathology

Specialty: Pathology

MD2B Connect Physician ID # TBD

Where will this rotation take place: This inpatient and outpatient rotation will take place in a hospital 25 miles south of Chicago.

Hours: Monday - Friday 9 AM to 5 PM

What you will do: Please note that this is not a shadowing observership. You will be actively involved with the preceptor. You will be under the supervision of a pathologist who is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as well as Cytopathology. You will spend time with her as well as other members of her pathology group. Among the specialists you will learn from include pathologists with expertise in GI, breast, lung, and GU pathology.

This is a highly structured rotation during which you will observe grossing, frozen sections, FNA, and other procedures. You will have opportunities to study slides from their slide collection and library. You will also study the cases that are grossed the previous day and review the cases with the pathologists. To further enhance your learning, you will be given unknown cases to study and analyze.

You will also observe and participate in Tumor Board and other educational conferences. This will be an excellent way for you to better understand the vital role pathologists fill in the evaluation and management of patients.

The department has multiple active areas of research and inquiry, and you may have an opportunity to take part in a project. Please note that the availability of these projects is at the discretion of the preceptor.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking hands-on patient care experience in pathology.

Will a letter of recommendation be offered: Yes, assuming that the IMG meets the expectations of the rotation. Dr. Desai will provide the physician with guidelines which will improve the quality of the letter. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
