Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

What you will do: You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. This is a physician who is a dedicated educator with considerable experience in teaching and serves as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. The physician holds a hospital appointment at Cooper University Hospital.

Among the conditions or issues you will encounter in this outpatient practice include:

  • Prenatal care

  • Postpartum care

  • High-risk pregnancy

  • Pelvic pain

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Endometriosis

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding

  • Vaginitis

  • Contraception

  • Urinary incontinence

  • Infertility

After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient care (please note that this is not a shadowing experience; you will be actively involved in hands-on patient care under supervision):

  • You will take patient histories.

  • You will perform exams under the physician's supervision.

  • You will present patients.

  • You will research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • You will educate patients (students will typically make 1-2 topic presentations)

  • You will teach other team members.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

Please note that the preceptor is open to having students take part in scholarly activity or short-term research projects like case reports and other studies. Please note that the availability of the project is at the preceptor's discretion.  If you are interested in such opportunities, please let the preceptor know as early as possible.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking clinical experience in obstetrics and gynecology. Please note that, because of the preferences of this physician's patient population, only female students are eligible to complete this rotation.

Will a letter of recommendation be offered: Yes, assuming that the IMG meets the expectations of the rotation. Dr. Desai will provide the physician with guidelines which will improve the quality of the letter. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
