OUTPATIENT EXternship IN endocrinology
MD2B Connect Physician ID # TBD
Where will the rotation take place: This hands-on rotation will take place in Peoria, Illinois.
Hours: Monday - Wednesday 8 AM to 5 PM; Thursday 8 AM to 1 PM
What you will do: This is an outpatient experience during which you will be under the supervision of a highly regarded physician educator who is board-certified in Endocrinology. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and is involved in the education of residents from the University of Illinois. He is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, and has been President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (Illinois Chapter). In his distinguished career, he has been the recipient of many awards from prestigious organizations, including the American Medical Association and American Diabetes Association. He is on the hospital staff at Unity Point Health Methodist Hospital which is the main teaching hospital for the family medicine and psychiatry residency programs at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.
As an IMG physician, he is well aware of the challenges involved in securing residency positions in the U.S., and is motivated to provide high quality rotation experiences so that that IMGs can develop important clinical skills. In his office, you will encounter patients with diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity, hypertension, osteoporosis, and other endocrine disorders.
After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient care (please note that this not a shadowing observership; you will be actively involved in patient care). This includes the following:
You will take patient histories.
You will perform physical exams under the physician's supervision.
You will present patients.
You will have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
You will have the opportunity to give talks or topic presentations.
You will be involved in patient education.
You will teach other team members.
You will spend time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.
You will receive regular feedback on your performance.
There may be opportunities to attend conferences at the hospital, including Grand Rounds at the University of Illinois and Grand Rounds at Unity Point Health Methodist Hospital. Please note that these opportunities will be at the discretion of the preceptor.
Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking hands-on patient care experience in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Endocrinology.
Will a letter of recommendation be offered: Yes, assuming that the IMG meets the expectations of the rotation. Dr. Desai will provide the physician with guidelines which will improve the quality of the letter. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
