outpatient US clinical experience
in plastic Surgery

Specialty: Plastic Surgery

MD2B Connect Physician ID # 252

Where will this rotation take place: This outpatient US clinical experience will take place in New York City at multiple locations (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Long Island).

Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30 AM to 4 PM

Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

What you will do: You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board certified in plastic surgery. The physician is on staff at multiple hospitals, including Lenox Hill Hospital, New York Presbyterian Hospital, NYU, Mt. Sinai, and Nassau University Medical Center. The preceptor is actively involved in the education of plastic surgery residents at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook. The attending has also taught PA and medical students from NYU and Hofstra.

Cases seen in the outpatient practice are split evenly between cosmetic and reconstructive cases. Topics learners should read about to maximize their learning in this rotation include:

  • Sutures and knot tying

  • Wound healing

  • Grafts and flaps

  • Skin and subcutaneous disease

  • Breast surgery

  • Pressure sores

  • Local anesthetics

  • Facial trauma

  • Facial aesthetics

  • Aesthetic surgery/body contouring

  • Chest/abdominal reconstruction

  • Lower extremity reconstruction

  • Burn reconstruction

  • Microsurgery

Please note that this physician is a member of a large group of plastic surgeons. A small part of your total time in this rotation will be spent with colleagues in the group.

After one week of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient care (please note that this is not a shadowing observership; you will be actively involved in patient care):

  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Observing cases in the operating room

  • Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in plastic surgery.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation: The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
