lexington pediatrics

outpatient externship in pediatrics

Specialty: Pediatrics

MD2B Connect Physician ID # TBD

Where will this rotation take place: This outpatient hands-on rotation will take place in Lexington, Kentucky (approximately 30 miles south of downtown).

Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8 AM to 5 PM

What you will do: Please note that this is not a shadowing observership experience. This is a hands-on clinical experience. You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in pediatrics. She splits her time between her faculty position at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and her private practice. Students who join her for this rotation will only be with her at her private clinic. She has had considerable experience in teaching third- and fourth-year medical students from the University of Kentucky as well as international medical graduates. She has staff appointments at the following hospitals: University of Kentucky and Ephraim McDowell Health.

After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient care. You will do the following under supervision:

  • You will take patient histories.

  • You will perform exams under the physician's supervision.

  • You will present patients.

  • You will research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • You will educate patients.

  • You will spend time with other healthcare professionals in the office and the hospital.

Please note that this preceptor typically has up to 4 students in-person at any one time. She may also have up to 5 telemedicine students.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking hands-on patient care experience in pediatrics.

Will a letter of recommendation be offered: Yes, assuming that the IMG meets the expectations of the rotation. Dr. Desai will provide the physician with guidelines which will improve the quality of the letter.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
