HOUSTON Allergy & Immunology

OUTPATIENT EXternship IN Allergy/Immunology

Specialty: Allergy & Immunology

MD2B Connect Physician ID # 7

Where will the rotation take place: This hands-on rotation will take place in an outpatient practice in a suburb of Houston (approximately 30 miles west of downtown).

Hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday - 9 AM to 5 PM; Tuesday and Thursday - 9 AM to 6:30 PM

Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

What you will do: You will learn from a physician who is affiliated with Memorial Hermann Hospital, West Houston Medical Center, and Methodist St. Catherine. He is highly regarded for delivering compassionate, high quality care.

In the mornings, you will see patients in his office. After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient care (please note that this is not a shadowing observership; you will be actively involved in patient care). This includes the following:

  • You will take patient histories.

  • You will perform physical exams under the physician's supervision.

  • You will present patients.

  • You will write or enter clinic notes in the EMR.

  • You will have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • You will have opportunities to give talks about important topics.

  • You will be involved in patient education.

  • You will teach other team members.

  • You will spend time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

You may also have opportunities to work on a project to improve the physician's practice. This may include creation of patient care handouts, an orientation manual for future students who will rotate in the clinic, article for community newspaper, and case reports. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain valuable skills in patient care while taking part in non-patient care related activities that will strengthen your CV for residency.  The exact nature of the project will be decided by the preceptor and you.

You will also have a chance to network by attending monthly allergy association meetings where numerous allergists will be present.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking hands-on patient care experience. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics will find this rotation particularly useful since allergy problems are common in outpatient practice.

Will a letter of recommendation be offered: Yes, assuming that the IMG meets the expectations of the rotation. Dr. Desai will provide the physician with guidelines which will improve the quality of the letter. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

"This rotation is useful for those wishing to get involved with allergy/immunology or for those wanting to work on their clinical skills. The attending is knowledgeable about clinical interactions and will help students make a comfortable transition into clinical practice. Observers can expect to learn a lot throughout the rotation and be comfortable interacting with patients and determining management plans for commonly seen diseases at the end of the rotation." - Ryan
