HOUSTON Allergy & Immunology

OUTPATIENT US Clinical experience
IN Allergy/Immunology

Specialty: Allergy & Immunology

MD2B Connect Physician ID # 7

Where will the rotation take place: This US clinical experience will take place in an outpatient practice in a suburb of Houston (approximately 30 miles west of downtown).

Hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday - 9 AM to 5 PM; Tuesday and Thursday - 9 AM to 6:30 PM

Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

What you will do: You will learn from a physician who is affiliated with Memorial Hermann Hospital, West Houston Medical Center, and Methodist St. Catherine. He is highly regarded for delivering compassionate, high quality care.

In the mornings, you will see patients in his office. After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient encounters and learn the following under the preceptor’s supervision:

  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing physical exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Writing or entering clinic notes in the EMR.

  • Have opportunities to research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Have opportunities to give talks about important topics.

  • Being involved in patient education.

  • Teaching other team members.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals to understand their roles and responsibilities.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

You may also have opportunities to work on a project to improve the physician's practice. This may include creation of patient care handouts, an orientation manual for future students who will rotate in the clinic, article for community newspaper, and case reports. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain valuable skills in patient care while taking part in non-patient care related activities that will strengthen your CV for residency.  The exact nature of the project will be decided by the preceptor and you.

You will also have a chance to network by attending monthly allergy association meetings where numerous allergists will be present.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics will find this rotation particularly useful since allergy problems are common in outpatient practice.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation: The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

TESTIMONIALS

Ryan

"This rotation is useful for those wishing to get involved with allergy/immunology or for those wanting to work on their clinical skills. The attending is knowledgeable about clinical interactions and will help students make a comfortable transition into clinical practice. Observers can expect to learn a lot throughout the rotation and be comfortable interacting with patients and determining management plans for commonly seen diseases at the end of the rotation."
