Detroit cardiology

outpatient externship in cardiology

Specialty: Cardiology

MD2B Connect Physician ID # 20

Where will this rotation take place: Most of this outpatient hands-on rotation will take place in a northern suburb of Detroit (approximately 20 miles from downtown). Please note that this doctor does travel to different outpatient locations in the Detroit area. A vehicle is highly recommended.

Hours: Monday 8 AM to Noon; Tuesday Noon to 5 PM; Wednesday 8 AM to 5 PM; Thursday Noon to 5 PM; Friday 8 AM to 5 PM

Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

What you will do: You will be under the supervision of a board-certified cardiologist. After completing his internal medicine residency at Wayne State University, he was selected to serve as Chief Medical Resident. He then completed a fellowship in cardiology followed by a second fellowship in Interventional Cardiology. He is actively involved in the education of residents and fellows at Wayne State University and William Beaumont Hospital - Royal Oak. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University. He is an accomplished cardiologist and holds board certification in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and cardiac CT.

This rotation will take place at his office as well as other cardiology practices in the Detroit area where he is called upon for his expertise. Please note that a large part of this practice is interventional cardiology, and you will have the opportunity to observe and assist with procedures.

After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient care (please note that this not a shadowing observership; this is a hands-on clinical experience):

  • You will take patient histories.

  • You will perform the exam under the preceptor's supervision.

  • You will develop evidence-based therapeutic plans.

  • You will present patients.

  • You will write progress notes.

  • You will educate patients.

  • You will research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • You will spend time with other healthcare professionals, front office staff, medical assistants, and nurses, to understand their roles and responsibilities.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

Please note that this position is clinical. However, there may be opportunities to work on projects to improve the physician's practice. This is something that can be discussed with the physician preceptor.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking hands-on patient care experience in cardiology. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine or internal medicine will find this rotation particularly useful since cardiac problems are common in these specialties.

Will a letter of recommendation be offered: Yes, assuming that the IMG meets the expectations of the rotation. Dr. Desai will provide the physician with guidelines which will improve the quality of the letter. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

When is this rotation available: One position is available every month. We are currently filling positions for 2019.
