inpatient/OUTPATIENT EXternship IN psychiatry

Specialty: Psychiatry

MD2B Connect Physician ID # 132

Where will this rotation take place: This combined hands-on inpatient and outpatient rotation will take place in Cleveland, Ohio and surrounding areas, including Akron and other cities. A vehicle will be required to travel to different locations.

Hours: Monday - Friday 8 AM to 5 PM

What you will do: You will be under the supervision of a psychiatrist who evaluates and manages the care of patients with depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, anxiety, and substance abuse. He completed his psychiatry residency in the Northeast where he served as chief resident. He is actively involved in the education of family medicine residents at the Firelands Family Medicine Residency Program where he serves as a teaching attending and delivers didactics. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University.

He holds staff appointments at the following hospitals: Firelands Regional Medical Center, Akron General Hospital, Highland Springs Hospital, University Hospitals Cleveland, Cleveland Clinic, and Columbus East Hospital.

With a passion for teaching, this preceptor is dedicated to making this clinical experience highly educational for international medical graduates. Learners may be able to attend morning report in the inpatient psychiatric unit as well as hospital conferences. Psychiatry subject review for the USMLE may also be available during the experience. The preceptor would like all students considering this rotation to know the following:

I am an IMG myself, would like to help all students and prepare them for a successful career in the US, and make their match experience easier.

This is a combined inpatient and outpatient experience. You will alternate weeks in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

Please note that this is not a shadowing observership. This is a hands-on clinical experience. After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient care under supervision:

  • You will take patient histories.

  • You will perform exams under the physician's supervision.

  • You will present patients.

  • You will write or enter progress notes.

  • You will research the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • You will educate patients.

  • You will spend time with other healthcare professionals (nurse practitioners and social workers) in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking hands-on patient care experience in psychiatry. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine or internal medicine will find this rotation particularly useful since mental health problems are common in outpatient and inpatient practice.

Will a letter of recommendation be offered: Yes, assuming that the IMG meets the expectations of the rotation. Dr. Desai will provide the physician with guidelines which will improve the quality of the letter. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
