inpatient/OUTPATIENT US clinical Experience
IN psychiatry

Specialty: Psychiatry

MD2B Connect Physician ID # 132

Where will this rotation take place: This combined inpatient and outpatient US clinical experience will take place in Cleveland, Ohio and surrounding areas, including Akron and other cities. A vehicle will be required to travel to different locations. Because of limited hospital access due to the pandemic, this rotation is currently not available.

Hours: Monday - Friday 8 AM to 5 PM

Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

What you will do: You will be under the supervision of a psychiatrist who evaluates and manages the care of patients with depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, anxiety, and substance abuse. He completed his psychiatry residency in the Northeast where he served as chief resident. He is actively involved in the education of family medicine residents at the Firelands Family Medicine Residency Program where he serves as a teaching attending and delivers didactics. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University.

He holds staff appointments at the following hospitals: Firelands Regional Medical Center, Akron General Hospital, Highland Springs Hospital, University Hospitals Cleveland, Cleveland Clinic, and Columbus East Hospital.

With a passion for teaching, this preceptor is dedicated to making this clinical experience highly educational for international medical graduates. Learners may be able to attend morning report in the inpatient psychiatric unit as well as hospital conferences. Psychiatry subject review for the USMLE may also be available during the experience. The preceptor would like all students considering this rotation to know the following:

I am an IMG myself, would like to help all students and prepare them for a successful career in the US, and make their match experience easier.

This is a combined inpatient and outpatient experience. You will alternate weeks in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

After a few days of observation, you will take on an increasing role in patient encounters and learn the following under the preceptor’s supervision:

  • Taking patient histories.

  • Performing exams under the physician's supervision.

  • Presenting patients.

  • Writing or entering progress notes.

  • Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

  • Educating patients.

  • Spending time with other healthcare professionals (nurse practitioners and social workers) in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities.

The activities above will mostly take place in the outpatient setting. As a result of hospital policies, inpatient activities will be more observational.

You will receive regular feedback on your performance.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in psychiatry. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine or internal medicine will find this rotation particularly useful since mental health problems are common in outpatient and inpatient practice.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation: The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
