inpatient/OUTPATIENT US Clinical Experience
IN orthopedic surgery

Specialty: Orthopedic Surgery

MD2B Connect Physician ID # 234

Where will this rotation take place: This inpatient and outpatient US clinical experience will take place in Chicago. The hospital is within 3 miles of the outpatient clinic.

Hours: Monday 9 AM to 3 PM; Tuesday Noon to 5 PM; Wednesday 9 AM to Noon; Thursday Noon to 5 PM; Friday 9 AM to 3 PM (1-2 days per week in the hospital observing surgery)

Hours have been provided by the preceptor. Hours are subject to change at the preceptor’s discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.

What you will do: You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in orthopedic surgery. Following residency training, this physician completed a fellowship in knee reconstructive surgery and sports medicine. For over 30 years, this physician served as a faculty member in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at a major Chicago medical school. This preceptor is currently an attending physician in the Ascension Illinois Health System and NorthShore University Health System and holds staff appointments at hospitals within these health systems. He is a member of American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.

During a distinguished career, this preceptor has published numerous articles in such journals as Orthopedics and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. This preceptor has served as a reviewer for academic journals and is presently on the Editorial Board of a major journal in orthopedic surgery. He is a very academic physician who enjoys teaching and fostering a love for learning among his students. He is very knowledgeable about the current literature and will share key articles and studies with you related to the patients seen in the clinic or operating room.

In the outpatient practice, you will be exposed to patients with spine, hip, knee, ankle, and foot problems. You will become familiar with the evaluation and management of these problems in both nonsurgical and surgical contexts. To make the most of your learning opportunities, we recommend that you read the following primer written by Dr. Laurence Dahners. This is an excellent guide to ensure you have covered the core concepts in orthopedic surgery.

Orthopedic Clerkship: Mini-Text

Your level of responsibility in the clinic (e.g., taking histories) will depend on your level of experience in the U.S. and in orthopedic surgery, as well as your communication skills. One to two days per week, you will accompany the physician to the hospital where you will be able to observe surgeries. Please note that hospital policies do not allow rotators to scrub in.

The activities above will mostly take place in the outpatient setting. As a result of hospital policies, inpatient activities will be more observational.

Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in orthopedic surgery or sports medicine.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation: The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.

During the rotation: Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
